Homage

Michael Ballhaus meets Jim Rakete

##
The 66th Berlinale will award an Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement to German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, to whom this year’s Homage is also dedicated. Ballhaus is one of the world’s most important cinematographers. Before spending 25 years working primarily in the USA, Ballhaus established his reputation in Germany where he worked with auteur R. W. Fassbinder, among others. At the lens alongside great American directors such as Martin Scorsese, he had a decisive effect on the look of US moviemaking. The list of directors with whom he has worked includes such luminaries as Mike Nichols, Steve Kloves, and Francis Ford Coppola. – Speaking with German photographer Jim Rakete, whose pictures can be found in major collections such as the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Michael Ballhaus will retrace key steps in his career, discuss the close collaboration between director and DP, and reflect on the art of using light, framing, focus and – above all – creativity to shape the perfect image. A joint presentation of Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen and Berlinale Talents at the HAU Hebbel am Ufer (HAU1) theatre.
