Since 2010, Berlinale Goes Kiez has been bringing the festival to the art house cinemas of the city and its surrounding areas. This special presentation pays tribute to the work of those film theatres whose committed operators champion a vibrant cinema culture and their audiences who value a diversity of programming around the year.
On the seven evenings when the Red Carpet moves from Berlin neighbourhood to neighbourhood, the cinemas and their audiences are the stars of the festival. With a selection of films and events from the various Berlinale programmes, this special presentation offers a cross-section of the festival at decentralised cinema venues. For audiences, Berlinale Goes Kiez provides the opportunity to see Berlinale screenings in their “own” neighbourhood cinema and to enjoy a festival atmosphere on their doorstep. International film guests receive a special glimpse into the local cinema landscape and can have a direct exchange with the audience. Anne Lakeberg and Hauke Heumann alternate as hosts through the programme and lead the audience discussions with the films' cast and crews.
The Berlinale Goes Kiez project was initiated on the festival’s 60th anniversary in 2010 and, since then, has proven to be an absolute audience favourite.
In recent years, Berlinale Goes Kiez has been a guest in the following cinemas: ACUDkino (Mitte), Adria (Steglitz), Babylon (Kreuzberg), Blauer Stern (Pankow), BrotfabrikKino (Weißensee), Bundesplatz-Kino (Wilmersdorf), b-ware!
