World Cinema Fund

Application Deadlines

  • Production funding: March 03, 2020
  • Distribution funding: submission open only for films that will have their theatrical release in German cinemas in 2020

Together with the Federal Foundation for Culture and in cooperation with the Goethe Institute, the Foreign Ministry and German producers, the World Cinema Fund works to develop and support cinema in regions with a weak film infrastructure, while fostering cultural diversity in German cinemas. The World Cinema Fund supports films that could not be made without additional funding: films that stand out with an unconventional aesthetic approach, that tell powerful stories and transmit an authentic image of their cultural roots.

The World Cinema Fund supports exclusively the production and distribution of feature films and feature-length documentaries. The support is focused on the following regions and countries: Latin America, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, the Caucasus as well as Bangladesh, Nepal, Mongolia and Sri Lanka.

Special Funding Programme: WCF Africa

In 2016 the World Cinema Fund in cooperation with the German Federal Foreign Office launched a special funding opportunity for projects from Sub-Saharan Africa. All WCF submissions with projects from Sub-Saharan Africa will automatically also be considered for the special funding by the WCF Sub-Saharan Africa programme.

WCF submission deadlines and WCF guidelines for production funding apply. The usual form for WCF production funding should be used for submission. The funding of € 160,000 in 2016 is provided by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Please note:
You can find detailed information, downloads of the guidelines, forms and more on the page Guidelines, Forms & Deadlines as well as on the FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions page.
