Raiders of the Lost Ark

Indiana Jones – Jäger des verlorenen Schatzes
In 1936, US intelligence recruits archaeologist Professor “Indiana” Jones to find and secure the legendary Ark of the Covenant before Adolf Hitler’s Nazis get their hands on it. The Israelites’ lost relic will allegedly make them invincible. From his mentor’s daughter and his ex-girlfriend, “Indy” learns that the treasure is somewhere in the ancient Egyptian city of Tanis. But when Indiana and Marion arrive at Tanis, the Nazi henchmen have beaten them to it. Gestapo agent Arnold Toht and his French accomplice, rival archaeologist René Belloq, immediately prove their evil intent by kidnapping Marion and trying to kill Indy … Raiders of the Lost Ark was born of countless trips to the movies. Over the course of this breakneck film, Spielberg and producer George Lucas take us on a fast and furious ride through the highlights of the adventure genre – from old children’s matinee serials such as Jungle Girl (1941) to gadgets that would make James Bond’s Q proud. In a modern-day interpretation, Indiana Jones is certainly the embodiment of imperialist interference in the cultures of the global south, but its ironic mien largely excuses it from being a part of the current discourse.
