“Europe’s Golden Bears”
Six decades of the Berlinale – EUNIC Berlin Film Series at the Cinema Arsenal

EUNIC Berlin, a network of European national institutes for culture in Berlin, has launched an initiative to present European winners of the Golden Bear from six decades of the Berlinale.
The film series “Europe’s Golden Bears” will screen a selection of more than 20 European full-length and short films that have won Golden Bears, the top award at the Berlin International Film Festival: “Europe’s Golden Bears” will take viewers on a journey through the history of the Berlinale, from its beginnings in 1951 until today. The series gives moviegoers an opportunity to compare films across borders and time. Moreover, it demonstrates how cultural ties between the different countries in Europe have flourished over the years.
On September 13, 2012, the film series will open at the Cinema Arsenal with Rainer Simon’s Die Frau und der Fremde (The Woman and the Stranger). Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick will speak a few words of welcome. On a total of eight evenings until the end of November, the 16 participating cultural institutes will present the programme at the Arsenal (starting at 19 h and 21 h / 21.30 h). Special guests – including Rainer Simon (director, Germany), Emilio Martínez Lázaro (director, Spain), Želimir Žilnik (director, Serbia) – will introduce the individual films and discuss them with the audience.

“The Berlinale has followed the development of European auteur cinema for decades. We are delighted that EUNIC will be offering audiences in Berlin a chance to experience a number of cinematic gems from past festivals on the big screen again,” says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick.

An EUNIC Berlin event in cooperation with the Berlin International Film Festival and the Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst.
