Based on the first volume of a trilogy by Russian science-fiction author Sergey Lukyanenko, the film is a fantastic fable and its resounding success last year caused a stir even in the Western press. As Die Welt reported: A revolution has taken place in the Russian film industry. (
) Never before has a film opened as successfully in Russia as did the fantasy thriller by advert director Timur Bekmambetov. Whether MATRIX, TROY, STAR WARS or LORD OF THE RINGS NIGHT WATCH has cited all these works and then outdistanced the originals at the box office.
The story revolves around the age-old battle between good and evil, between the forces of dark and light, personified in the leaders Boris Geser, who as white wizard heads the Day Watch, and Savulon, who is the commander of the Night Watch. A truce obliges them to patrol the streets of Moscow together. And then the film jumps to 1992, to young Anton Gorodetskys discovery that he is one of the chosen Others. Twelve years later, as a kind of middle-grade white wizard, he too sides with light and fights for the Night Watch. However his magical powers increase at high speed
