Until the Birds Return (En Attendant Les Hirondelles)

Six main characters are revealed through three different narratives. Mourad (65) is focused on his life: his work, his wife, his son. He will do anything to avoid trouble, even at the risk of making immoral choices. Aicha (25) is trying to forget her past by marrying a decent man, hoping to start a new life with him. On the way to her new home, she starts having second thoughts. Dahman (45) is a doctor, also hoping to start a new life. He is waiting patiently for a promotion that will improve his social standing, which in turn might open up the possibility of marriage. All of them are forced to deal with the consequences of the choices they have made in life.

Director’s note
The stories in my film are first and foremost social stories, about ordinary people living ordinary lives. The screenplay develops a series of portraits of men and women coming to terms with everyday life and Algeria’s recent history. It brings to the screen people’s aspirations for a better life (through their desire, will and strategy), set against the actual accomplishment of such aspirations. At the same time, the intention is to portray relationships between men and women, their individual places within society, and to single out their responsibilities in building modern Algerian society and working towards changing it for the future.
