Berlinale Shorts II

HaMa’azin | How to Disappear | Inflorescence | Veitstanz/Feixtanz | Cause of Death

He is young and works for Israeli military intelligence, listening in on conversations between Palestinians. The phone calls of a gay couple fascinate him more and more, and he is unsure whether and, if so, in what way he should follow his feelings.

How to Disappear is an anti-war film in the truest sense of the word. Searching for peace in the most unlikely of places – an online war game – it is a tribute to disobedience and desertion, in both the digital and physical-real worlds of warfare.

Eternally united, pink rose petals endure together the slings and arrows of a heavy thunderstorm. A bedtime story about resistance and redundancy. Let’s unite and blossom!

1988 in Erfurt, East Germany. A group of people take the liberty to shake it all off and dance themselves into ecstasy at sites of their own choosing. Everyone for themselves, captured on Super 8 film.

Through archival film footage, animation and spoken word poetry an experience of structural violence against women is exposed.

Untitled Sequence of Gaps | Matata

Composed of vignettes in different techniques and materialities, Untitled Sequence of Gaps uses the form of an essay film to approach trauma-related memory loss via reflections on light outside the visible spectrum – on what is felt but never seen.

A photo shoot of a model dressed as a replica of a photograph taken during King Léopold II’s brutal colonial rule of Congo spirals into a series of dance-inspired dreamscapes, fading mind projections of historical fragments, and the external world.

Expressions: The Queer Short Films of the 70th Berlinale

Untitled Sequence of Gaps | Babylebbe | Playback. Ensayo de una despedida | HaMa’azin | Who Can Predict What Will Move You | El nombre del hijo | Extractions | Panteres

Composed of vignettes in different techniques and materialities, Untitled Sequence of Gaps uses the form of an essay film to approach trauma-related memory loss via reflections on light outside the visible spectrum – on what is felt but never seen.

With BABYDYKE written across her forehead, Frede stubbornly sticks to her plan to win back her ex-girlfriend in a night of close encounters. The next day, her sister sees her in a different light – and Frede sees herself differently too.

“La Delpi”, the sole survivor of a group of transgender women and drag queens, remembers how lipstick, playback performances and improvised stage outfits galvanised the community and helped them in their struggle against AIDS and police violence.

He is young and works for Israeli military intelligence, listening in on conversations between Palestinians. The phone calls of a gay couple fascinate him more and more, and he is unsure whether and, if so, in what way he should follow his feelings.

Two young men shooting hoops somewhere in Brooklyn. Their shadows dance, entwined, to the cadence of basketball meeting pavement. Tentatively, gently, Livia Huang’s densely atmospheric film traces desire and intimacy through gazes and gestures.

Lucho knows who he is. It’s the others who seem mixed up, with their probing looks and pointed questions. Lovingly though awkwardly, a father attempts to support his trans-identifying child.

Extractions parallels resource extraction with the booming child apprehension industry. As the filmmaker reviews how these industries have affected her, she reflects on having her own eggs retrieved and frozen to make an Indigenous baby.

Joana examines the bodies of the women at the pool, her own reflection, and her classmates’ reactions. Her attempts to break through her girlfriend Nina’s bad mood are punctuated by experiments: with tampons, sketched penises and music.
