Theo Angelopoulos’ virtuoso debut is at once the cool reconstruction of a crime of passion and a half-documentary exploration of the social conditions that form the backdrop to the murder.

Even in her job at a children’s day care centre, Anne prefers fun to actual work and often alienates those around her with her erratic behaviour. Deragh Campbell gives a brilliant performance in this study of a woman teetering on the brink.

It Wasn’t the Right Mountain, Mohammad | Playback. Ensayo de una despedida | 2008 | Écume

The same old adventure recited in a new synthetic world, starring: God, Abraham, Isaac, a lost shepherd and the antelopes in the role of the Ram. Nobody is innocent.

“La Delpi”, the sole survivor of a group of transgender women and drag queens, remembers how lipstick, playback performances and improvised stage outfits galvanised the community and helped them in their struggle against AIDS and police violence.

Images of cherry blossom, luminous fields bursting with colour and miscellaneous domestic ephemera are photographed from the screen of an obsolete televisual device. A magical melody for the eyes, presented in 3D.

The car repair shop is their second home and their colleagues are like family. Everyone has their quirks and is accepted for the way they are. But then comes the bad news: they are soon to be squeezed out by a more lucrative new building project.

HaMa’azin | How to Disappear | Inflorescence | Veitstanz/Feixtanz | Cause of Death

He is young and works for Israeli military intelligence, listening in on conversations between Palestinians. The phone calls of a gay couple fascinate him more and more, and he is unsure whether and, if so, in what way he should follow his feelings.

How to Disappear is an anti-war film in the truest sense of the word. Searching for peace in the most unlikely of places – an online war game – it is a tribute to disobedience and desertion, in both the digital and physical-real worlds of warfare.

Eternally united, pink rose petals endure together the slings and arrows of a heavy thunderstorm. A bedtime story about resistance and redundancy. Let’s unite and blossom!

1988 in Erfurt, East Germany. A group of people take the liberty to shake it all off and dance themselves into ecstasy at sites of their own choosing. Everyone for themselves, captured on Super 8 film.

Through archival film footage, animation and spoken word poetry an experience of structural violence against women is exposed.

Berlinale Shorts III

My Galactic Twin Galaction | Stump the Guesser | Filipiñana | Celle qui porte la pluie | T

Good and evil, utopia and dystopia, narrative and post-narrative collide in a mortal battle, played out for the viewer’s entertainment.

After a bad day at work, a fairground performer sets out to disprove the theory of heredity so that he can marry his sister. An absurdist firework of a silent film.

The self-contained cosmos of a golf course reflects social structures. New “tee-girl” Isabel still has to learn the rules. But she is already looking for loopholes to subvert the system.

Her father will die soon, but the doctors have been saying that for years. She is left alone with her suppressed pain and the banal tasks of everyday life. Only in the magical darkness of the forest is it possible to grieve.

“When you do things with your hands, it heals you in places lower than where you cry from,” she says. A film that is a manifestation of grief, anger and the spiritual power of creativity.

A Demonstration | Atkūrimas | Aletsch Negative | À l’entrée de la nuit | Union County

The word “monster” comes from the Latin “monstrare”, meaning to show, to reveal, to demonstrate. A Demonstration picks up on these themes in a poetic exploration of the limits of sight and the metamorphosis of form.

A crime scene inspection in the forest. The cool re-staging of an act of raw brutality is almost unbearable. But the solidarity that ensues has its own dynamic.

The Aletsch is the largest and longest glacier in the Alps – and it is melting. Images of this microcosm reflect the problems of the macrocosm Earth. Animations toy with the viewer’s perception and simulate the decline of perennial ice.

He wanted to cross the sea but never arrived. A requiem in three shots.

Cody manages to get his feet back on the ground by taking small steps, all humble and persistent. But his opiate past doesn’t want to forget him.

They set off, looking for work in far-off places, but disappeared along the way. Inspired by Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s “birha” poetry, the film traces the longing on both sides: on the part of those who are missing, and those that wait for them to return.

In the wake of a frightening collapse, a young dancer is hospitalized and struggles to regain control of her body against a strange force inside. A meditation on the relationship between mind, body and identity.

A family in a living room, shot in one take. The blackout curtains are drawn and everyone tries to keep calm while outside, bombs are falling. But their nerves are on edge. Everyday life in a permanent state of emergency.
