Once Upon a Time: How to Start a Film?

with Greta Gerwig, Michel Gondry, James Schamus

A good start is half the work, opening scenes should have the quality to charm, enchant, intrigue or shock us. They make us fall in love or become captivated by the characters, instantly propelling us into the film’s story. James Schamus (Lust Caution, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Ice Storm), Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep) and Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha, Nights & Weekends) have all produced, directed or acted in the films that they wrote. Schamus, Gondry and Gerwig are on the Berlinale's International Jury this year, and will kick off Berlinale Talents 2014's storytelling focus by sharing stories behind the opening scenes of their well-known films.
