Press Releases 2013

Jan 15, 2013:
Selection of Fictional Features for Panorama’s Main Programme and Panorama Special Now Complete

31 fictional features from 23 countries will provide insights into contemporary world cinema production, and this includes a number of works just invited from Turkey, Indonesia, India, Taiwan and the Ivory Coast.

A striking number of productions from the USA bring back memories of the early 1980s to the mid 1990s when US independent cinema was a trademark of the Panorama programme. The slump that followed seems to have been overcome. The last few years have successively heralded in a new creative phase that is now taking on form. Panorama is delighted to stay abreast of this development by including a record number of extremely diverse films from the region. Also Central and South America will be making a strong showing – it looks likes a good year for the Americas.

Opening films

Among the titles just added (of which twelve are world premieres) is also the opening film of the Panorama Special at the Friedrichstadt-Palast. Nanouk Leopold’s Dutch-German co-production Boven is het stil (It’s all so Quiet) gives a good impression of what makes European cinema so extraordinary: being unafraid to look into a person’s soul, to describe the inner prison that we are perpetually struggling to break out of. Brilliant in his last role here is the recently deceased Jeroen Willems.

Also at the Friedrichstadt-Palast on February 8 is the previously announced entry from the USA, Don Jon’s Addiction, directed by award-winning actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Between a carefree sex addiction and his fascination for his dream woman, Gordon-Levitt in the leading role shapes the process of becoming an adult in one’s early thirties.

On Thursday February 7, the Panorama’s main programme will open with an astonishing directorial debut from Georgia: In Chemi Sabnis Naketsi (A Fold in my Blanket), Zaza Rusadze uses a highly imaginative cinematic language to portray the friendship of two men in a culture undergoing change.

The premieres of the Panorama’s main programme will be shown at CinemaxX 7. Panorama Special will again be screening at two venues, the Friedrichstadt-Palast and the Kino International.

The line-up of Panorama Dokumente will be announced in the next press release.
