Berlinale: Press Releases

Press Releases 2007

Jan 11, 2007:
22nd Panorama of the Berlinale announces first films

With works directed by actress Julie Delpy, actors Antonio Banderas, Steve Buscemi, and Mitchell Lichtenstein, who starred in Ang Lee’s Golden Bear winning film Hsi Yen (The Wedding Banquet) from 1993, as well as new films by Hal Hartley, E J-Yong, Hong Sangsoo, Eytan Fox and Thomas Arslan, the Panorama 2007 is presenting a large number of renowned filmmakers. After viewing a record number of film entries and visiting Asia, North and South America, Africa and Europe to select films, more than half of the works for the Main Programme, the Panorama Special and Panorama Dokumente have now been confirmed.

From the start, the mission of the Panorama section has been to discover films for the cinema programme of the coming arthouse season in Europe and provide the market with inspiration. The Panorama explores the responses of contemporary filmmakers to issues that move them and stories that preoccupy them. It also examines the life scripts and political processes they pursue, and the cinematic forms they use to recount them. The selection bridges the gap between artistic visions and commercial interests. The films are all shown as either world or European premieres.

In February 2007, more than 19,000 movie-goers will again cast their votes for their favourites for the Panorama Audience Awards, which are presented on the last day of the festival.

The films screening in the Panorama Dokumente series are to be announced in the next press release; the complete programme, at the end of January.
