Betty is ten years old. The Second World War has recently come to an end. She and her older sister Agnès live with their parents in a house with a garden. Betty is afraid of ghosts, and fears all the dark nooks and crannies where they could be hiding. One day, Agnès goes away to bording school leaving Betty alone with her parents and their almost mute housemaid. Moreover, with her parents' marriage on its last legs, Betty feels more lonely than ever. Enter Yvon, who one day climbs over the wall into her parents' garden from the adjacent psychiatric clinic run by her father. Moved by Yvon's frailness, Betty decides to hide the old man in the bike cellar for a few days. At last she has somebody she can talk to about her fears and joys. Although somewhat reticent, the old boy soon becomes Betty's best friend and ally. Unfortunately the hide-out among the bicycles isn't safe enough for Yvon, but he's afraid to look for a new home on his own. And so Betty decides to leave - with Yvon in tow.
