Press Releases 2003

Feb 13, 2003:
Berlinale Kamera to be awarded to the television station – Sender Freies Berlin

The Berlinale Kamera is presented to film personalities and institutions that the Berlin International Film Festival feels especially indebted to. The Berlinale expresses its thanks and acknowledgement by bestowing this honour. Since 1986, the Berlinale Kamera has been generously donated by the Berlin jeweller, David Goldberg.

Festival Director, Dieter Kosslick will present a Berlinale Kamera to the Berlin public broadcaster

Sender Freies Berlin

The presentation will take place on Friday, 14 February at 9.45pm in the SFB Studio in the Berlinale Palast. Accepting the award on behalf of SFB will be the SFB Director General Horst Schättle along with SFB editors and presenters.

Established in 1953 SFB has been a major media supporter of the Berlinale. Over the past 50 years SFB’s coverage of the Festival has continued to increase. Not only does SFB report extensively about the Berlinale on its numerous radio programmes, SFB has established a special place for the Berlinale in its television coverage.

The most successful regional news programme in Germany, the Abendschau, reports extensively on the Berlinale with numerous live reports from the red carpet and TV Specials about happenings at the Berlinale, the films, the directors and the stars. In 1993, a live daily special was established with the Berlinale Studio. Since the move to Potsdamer Platz the Berlinale Studio is aired live from the centre of the action, the Berlinale Palast.

For the past few years the Opening Ceremony and the Golden and Silver Bear Award Ceremony have been filmed exclusively by the SFB, the footage has then been made available and used by television stations around the world. This year for the first time the SFB has shown all Berlinale press conferences as part of its late night programming.

This is the first time that a broadcasting corporation has been awarded a Berlinale Kamera. With this award the SFB will be honoured for its extensive reporting about the Berlin International Film Festival over the past 50 years and its substantial contribution in raising public awareness about the Festival.
