Berlinale Spotlight: Generation in Japan and Indonesia 2019

For a number of years now, the Berlinale has presented specially curated programmes all over the world. The Berlinale Spotlight extends the festival time frame, giving the Berlinale’s activities visibility year-round.

In partnership with two Asian festivals, the Berlinale section Generation will present curated film programmes under the banner of Berlinale Spotlight: Generation. The section not only continues its cooperation, which was initiated last year, with the Nara International Film Festival in Nara, Japan, it will also be a guest for the first time at the Balinale - Bali International Film Festival in Indonesia.

On the occasion of the Nara International Film Festival Pre-festival Year Showcase 2019, and as part of the Youth Jury Program initiated in 2018, Generation will present four feature films from the most recent Berlinale in a jointly curated programme on September 15 and 16, 2019.

The 13th Balinale will take place from September 24 - 29, 2019. A diverse short film programme, curated from past festivals will be screened in the presence of Generation head Maryanne Redpath.

“I’m very pleased that the cooperation with the Nara International Film Festival is going to the next round, and that Generation will be represented for the first time at the Balinale this year. Both cooperations strengthen the section’s identity, which has always consisted of offering young cineastes and an open-minded adult audience access to artistically valuable films, and inviting them to participate in the discourse on international cinema,” says Maryanne Redpath, section head of Generation.
