A small town in the federal state of Florida, at Lake Okeechobee: Pahokee. Since the beginning of the 20th century a particular initiation rite has been practised here for boys on the cusp of manhood. While the sugarcane fields are burning, the young men come to the edges of the fields to capture the fleeing rabbits.
Speed and strength, courage and coordination skills are necessary in order to catch the rabbits with one’s bare hands. Afterwards, the animals are killed and eaten.
Patrick Bresnan has been acquainted with the Pakohee community for many years and has shot numerous documentaries there.
