The Berlin School: Films from the Berliner Schule

The authors discuss their book with filmmmakers of the Berliner Schule

Die Buchautoren diskutieren mit Vertretern der Berliner Schule (in englischer Sprache)

In the mid-1990s, a small group of Berlin-based auteur filmmakers emerged, building from what we can see now, twenty years on, was the intellectual rubble of the Wall. The three founding figures of what came to be known as The Berlin School, Thomas Arslan, Angela Schanelec, and Christian Petzold, all studied at the film school dffb (Deutsche Film-und Fernsehakademie Berlin), but their allegiance was to each other as filmmakers, not as members of a collective movement. This book, which accompanied the 2013 MoMA film series co-organized by the book’s authors, Rajendra Roy and Anke Leweke, provides a platform for the filmmakers, as well as scholars and critics, and adds new chapters to the rich and complex written history of auteur filmmaking in Germany.
The authors will debate their newly-released book with Angela Schanelec, Thomas Arslan and other filmmakers of the Berlin School.
