Steffen Kuchenreuther, long-time president of the SPIO and organiser of the Deutscher Filmball, died Sunday evening at the age of 65. As president of the Spitzenorganisation der Filmwirtschaft (SPIO) he represented the interests of the German film, television and video industries from 1997 to 2012. In addition, he shaped the German film world as vice president of the European cinema association UNIC, president of the Hauptverband Deutscher Filmtheater and board member of the Wirtschaftsverband der Filmtheater Bayern. Among his most recent distinctions were the Herbert Strate Award and the Federal Cross of Merit.
“The film industry and cinema culture have lost one of their most dedicated representatives, the KBB and the Berlinale have lost a great supporter, and I have lost a long lasting friend and companion,” said Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.
