As a film, theatre and opera director, artist Christoph Schlingensief belonged to the most renowned and creative personalities of the German cultural scene. His radical works provocatively challenged politics and society. Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick commented: "We have lost an extraordinary person, filmmaker and political artist. Schlingensief acted out of a deep moral conviction. With his art he fought passionately against deportation, racism and human rights violations."
Schlingensief showed three of his films in the Berlinale Forum: Menü total (1986), Egomania – Insel ohne Hoffnung (Egomania - Island Without Hope, 1987) and 100 Jahre Adolf Hitler – die letzte Stunde im Führerbunker (100 Years of Adolf Hitler, 1989).
Finally, in 2009, Christoph Schlingensief was a guest of the Berlinale as a member of the International Jury.
