Matabeleland, Zimbabwe, 1980s: Elizabeth, a young and talented storyteller arrives at a guerilla camp desperate for help: her life and the lives of the other villagers are in danger.
The soldiers demand a story so she spins them a tale, weaving fact with illusion. About her village, strangers and ghosts. About how her father dug a tunnel to the city and her journey to find him.
But reality is not so far behind and to save her village, Elizabeth will have to confront the truth.
