The Well
Nachiket and Sameer are not only the greatest of friends; they are even related to each other. The cousins have known each other since early childhood. Since they attend different schools and can’t always tell each other the latest news, they write each other long letters instead. In his letters, Nachiket describes his belief in transcendence, his longing to be one with the universe and reach a higher plane of existence through reincarnation. Sameer is more practical; his mind is on the summer holidays that will begin after their matriculation exams, and Aunty Seema, who is going to get married. The upcoming swimming championships are of course another topic of endless interest.
At last the holidays are here! The whole family meets up in the country; the large house has plenty of crooks and crannies in which to play hide-and-seek and the well in the middle of the fields is great for swimming. Sameer thinks it would be wonderful if Nachiket wanted to attend school in Pune, but his cousin has other plans. He would love nothing better than to be carried off, on a current of air. And then, one day, he does indeed disappear …
