San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk was more than a gay activist; he was regarded throughout society as having epitomised a courageous struggle for civil rights. Milk turns the interests of ordinary people living in his district – and the gay community – into his cause. Milk organises street parades of which he is often at the forefront, particularly when protesting against discrimination. No sooner does he take up office in City Hall in 1977 than he embarks on a large number of political initiatives that don’t always win him friends. One of his opponents – a colleague on the Board of Super­visors named Dan White – turns out to be his deadliest enemy …
