There will be two innovations for the 57th Berlin International Film Festival (Feb. 8-18, 2007): the Kinderfilmfest/14plus section will now be called Generation; and the short films in the Competition and the Panorama are to be united in a single programme.
Kinderfilmfest/14plus becomes Generation
The Kinderfilmfest/14plus section of the Berlin International Film Festival has been given a new name. From now on, the two separate competitions for children and youth films will be held under the name: Generation. “After successfully establishing our youth film competition 14plus alongside the Kinderfilmfest with its rich tradition,” Festival director Dieter Kosslick states, “it has become imperative for us to rename this section. With Generation we have found an appropriate term for this change in structure.”
Correspondingly, the competitions of the section are to be renamed into Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus. As was previously also the case, one joint committee will select the films for both competitions. “Renaming the section in this way enables us to communicate and define our profile more clearly,” Generation director Thomas Hailer explains. “We will continue to devote ourselves to films which regard the world from the perspective of the young generation.”
New dynamics for short films
To focus more attention on this important film format, the short film programmes of the Competition and the Panorama are being merged into one. “As an art form in its own right, the short film has become so important to us that we want to emphasize the fact by restructuring in this manner,” remarks Festival director Dieter Kosslick.
Together with the short film programmes in the Generation and Berlinale Talent Campus sections, directors of this versatile format will now be ideally networked within the Festival.
More information can be found in the regulations of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival. Film applications must be submitted by November 1, 2006.
