This year’s Competition programme will close with a digitally restored version of the classic Western Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid: Special Edition. Director Sam Peckinpah’s farewell to the old West was made in 1972. This “Special Edition” cut of the film will be screened for the first time. It is based on notes by the director and details provided by his colleagues.
The film will be screened in high-definition format on Saturday 18 February 2006 after the award ceremony in the Berlinale Palast.
The film is about an aging gunslinger who has given up his past life to become sheriff and ends up having to hunt down his old comrade “Billy the Kid”. Sam Peckinpah’s Western is an epic parable that not only sheds light on the USA during the Nixon era, but also on the once so legendary West.
