The Berlinale expresses its deepest concern about the verdict by the Iranian Revolutionary Court against filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof. On July 23, Rasoulof was sentenced to one year in prison and a two-year ban on leaving the country or getting involved in any social or political activity.
Through their actions of censorship, the Iranian authorities do not only restrict Rasoulof’s individual but also his artistic freedom of expression. As a filmmaker and artist, Mohammad Rasoulof depicts the world that we live in, which is an important means for reflection and discussion.
We thus join our colleagues at the European Film Academy and other film festivals in their call for the unconditional release of Mohammad Rasoulof.
