In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones

In 1974 New Delhi, Anand “Annie” Grover is a student at the state architecture institute. And has been for quite some time. At the moment, he is repeating the fifth year – for the fourth time. Four years ago, he made a derogatory joke about the dean in the men’s toilet. Since then, he has received a “fail” in every exam. No wonder he and his fellow students have nicknamed the dean “Yamdoot”, meaning “angel of death”. He is planning to fail Annie this semester, too. But this time, his fellow students come to his aid …
In her first screenplay, Indian writer Arundhati Roy brought memories of her own architecture studies to bear, in particular with her depiction of Radha as a critical, individualistic student. Her husband Pradip Krishen beautifully captures the zeitgeist, with a Che Guevara poster, books by Lenin and Beatles songs evoking the academic pop culture of the 1970s. The film was disseminated largely privately via VHS cassettes and achieved cult status. The 4K restoration was undertaken in collaboration with the director using the 16mm camera negative and a 35mm print.
