Haitian couple Esther and Junior undertake a journey to the northern part of the American continent with Esther’s daughters, Flor and Aisha. They are in pursuit of a better future. In Mexico, they settle in a remote forest where illegal logging shapes both the lives of the people and the fragile forest that surrounds them. As Junior grapples with the weight of his past and the family searches for their place in this unfamiliar environment, Esther becomes their anchor, cultivating moments of peace and care even as the world around them begins to fracture. Surrounded by monarch butterflies, the family discovers in this forest a fleeting but powerful place of love and resilience.

Joaquín del Paso

Born in 1986, the Mexican filmmaker studied at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in Cuba and the Polish National Film School in Łódź. His debut feature film Maquinaria Panamericana premiered in the Berlinale Forum in 2016 and won the Mexican Film Award, Ariel, for Best Original Screenplay. His second feature, El hoyo en la cerca, screened at Venice in 2021 and won several prizes at the Cairo International Film Festival. He also produced Robe of Gems by Natalia López Gallardo which was selected for the 2022 Berlinale Competition.
