Alternatives Denkmal für Deutschland (ADfD)

Alternative Monument for Germany
The Alternative Monument for Germany (ADfD) reimagines commemorating migration through a digital, multisensory experience. Addressing questions about how migration memories can be shared and preserved, the project counters xenophobic narratives in Germany and the EU. Rooted in queer, feminist, and migrant-centered perspectives, it evolved through workshops and community gatherings. Anchored by the displaced Ishtar Gate as a symbol of cultural heritage and displacement, ADfD integrates augmented reality, sound, and visuals to bridge digital and physical spaces. By blending collages, sculptures, and poetic expressions, it creates a fragmented yet cohesive visual narrative of migration. During Forum Expanded, the augmented reality installation ADfD will be showcased in the garden of Silent Green, offering an immersive exploration of migration’s traces via the Monuments AR app. Created collaboratively by individuals from diverse backgrounds, the monument exists in a digital, fluid state, accessible by choice rather than imposition.
