Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Ferris macht blau
Ferris Bueller is playing hooky for the ninth time this year. Convincing his parents he’s sick is a walk in the park. It’s a lot more difficult to fool school principal Ed Rooney, who’s determined to catch the notorious truant in the act. But he always seems to arrive just that smidgeon too late, as Ferris, bestie Cameron, and Ferris’ girlfriend Sloane cruise Chicago in a red Ferrari “borrowed” from Cameron’s father – dining out, going to a baseball game, and putting their own spin on Mercantile Exchange trades and the Von Steuben Day parade. Back at the Bueller home, Rooney strikes out again, confronting not Ferris, but a less than welcoming Rottweiler … With snappy dialogue and Ferris breaking the fourth wall with ironic asides, John Hughes refined the high school comedy into a delectable in-group joyride full of allusions to music, film, and fashion that remained out of reach of adults. Shot at Hughes’ alma mater, Glenbrook North high school, the film is an homage to the director’s hometown of Chicago, shining a spotlight on the conservatism of the local upper class. Sloane provides the romantic coda to the day’s shenanigans with her sotto voce “he’s gonna marry me”.
