Fleeing ahead of a police investigation, card shark Babe Stewart leaves New York for the small town of Glendale, where he meets librarian Connie Randall. An attractive blonde, she falls for the smooth-talking Babe and uses his love of gambling to get him to marry her. To conceal the source of his wealth, he pretends to be a stock trader on Wall Street, but at some point, his secret comes out. Connie finds his marked deck and thwarts his next attempt to cheat at cards, but she’s not ready to give up on him. Not even when his ex-girlfriend tells Connie the whole truth ... Seven years before their wedding, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard played a married couple in this romantic comedy. They were true to accepted gender roles, with Gable as the good-for-nothing heartbreaker, and Lombard the cool blond who uses her head rather than her sex appeal to reel him in. Although her character is clearly intent on redeeming him, this pre-code film provided plenty of opportunity for pillow talk, showing off her seductive side.
