May 1st 1988. The workers are marching in great columns on Karl Marx Allee in Berlin, capital of the German Democratic Republic, to demonstrate their devotion to the heads of the party and the state for the last time. Thomas Werner, who worked as a porter at the Deutsche Staatsoper at that time, accompanies his colleagues on the parade with a home movie camera.
