Walter Ruttmanns radio play, Weekend, was written and produced somewhere around the year 1930. The structure of this abstract collage of sounds bears some similarity with Ruttmanns famous 1927 work, BERLIN. DIE SINFONIE DER GROSSSTADT. In this film, directors Gockell and Winter use a fictional piece of found footage in order to place Ruttmanns acoustic collage in an entirely new context: In this restored version, the film originally intended as an acoustic collage to be heard whilst watching black film leader documents the traces left by time. The question as to whether Walter Ruttmann ever intended to add images to his acoustic collage remains open to speculation.
