Berlinale: Perspektive Deutsches Kino

Perspektive Deutsches Kino

Perspektive Deutsches Kino showcases thematic and artistic trends among next generation German filmmakers, and the known as well as the unexpected. The section provides a perspective on the future of German cinema. It fosters directorial talents who are on their way to making a name for themselves in the established German film scene with their ideas and visual realizations.

Around 12 films from the latest year of production are selected every year. Both feature and documentary films at least 20 minutes in length are screened. The spectrum of potential films is kept as open as possible, in order to also consider works made by film academy students, so there are practically no formal limitations.

To integrate more German films into the Berlinale was one of the key aims of Dieter Kosslick when he made his debut as festival director in 2002. With Perspektive Deutsches Kino he created a dedicated section which fulfilled this wish for the first time and offered young filmmakers an opportunity to present their work. Since 2010, Linda Söffker heads the series.

The following awards are presented to films in Perspektive Deutsches Kino:

FGYO-Award Dialogue en perspective
Since 2004, the prize has been awarded to a film entry in the section. The French-German Youth Office (FGYO) is already for the tenth time the sponsor of the “FGYO-Award Dialogue en perspective”, endowed with 5,000 €. The prize is the result of an intercultural dialogue on film between young people from three different countries: France, Germany and an annually changing third country.
The prize is awarded to the film that equally impresses the young and critical jury members from the three nations. The prize jury is composed of seven members and is headed by a president. The jury members are selected by the prize donators by means of a public call for application. The president of the jury is a professional whose work enriches the cinematographic dialogue between France and Germany. This jury is the only one at the Berlin International Film Festival which is constituted after an open call for tender. Further information on conditions of participation is available here.

Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship
Launched in 2012 by the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section and Berlinale’s partner Glashütte Original, the “Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship” will be awarded again at the Berlinale in 2013 to a talented young director from Perspektive Deutsches Kino. Conceived to support emerging German filmmakers to develop a project, material and screenplay, the €15,000 fellowship is funded by Glashütte Original. Eligible for participation are all the directors who screened films in the Perspektive’s programme in 2012.
