Berlinale:

Perspektive Deutsches Kino

Perspektive Deutsches Kino showcases thematic and artistic trends among next generation German filmmakers, and the known as well as the unexpected. The section provides a perspective on the future of German cinema. It fosters directorial talents who are on their way to making a name for themselves in the established German film scene with their ideas and visual realizations.

13 films from the latest year of production have been selected for the programme 2012. Both feature and documentary films at least 20 minutes in length are screened. The spectrum of potential films is kept as open as possible, in order to also consider works made by film academy students, so there are practically no formal limitations.

Perspektive Deutsches Kino programme 2012

To integrate more German films into the Berlinale was one of the key aims of Dieter Kosslick when he made his debut as festival director in 2002. With Perspektive Deutsches Kino he created a dedicated section which fulfilled this wish for the first time and offered young filmmakers an opportunity to present their work. Since 2010, Linda Söffker heads the series, following her predecessor Alfred Holighaus.

The following awards are presented to films in Perspektive Deutsches Kino:

  • Dialogue en perspective
  • Made in Germany - Perspektive Fellowship

The films of the Perspektive Deutsches Kino are considered for following cross-section awards:

  • Best First Feature Award
  • TEDDY AWARD
  • Femina Film Award

Jan Henrik Stahlberg (Jury President 2012)

Since 2004, the prize "Dialogue en perspective", has been awarded to a film entry in the section Perspektive Deutsches Kino. The German-French Youth Office is again the sponsor of the “Dialogue en perspective”. The prize is the result of an intercultural dialogue on film between young people from henceforth three different countries. For the second time an annually changing third country beside France and Germany will be invited to participate in the jury announcement.

In 2012 the jury will be chaired by director, actor and screenwriter Jan Henrik Stahlberg. In conjunction with seven cineastes from Germany, France and for the first time from Slovakia the winner of the "Dialogue en perspective” Award will be announced.

In 2012, the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section’s eleventh year, the Berlinale is launching the “Made in Germany - Perspektive Fellowship”, funded by Glashütte Original. The 15,000-euro fellowship is conceived to support emerging German directors in developing a film project, material and screenplay, and will be awarded to a talented new filmmaker from Perspektive Deutsches Kino. All of the directors who presented films in the Perspektive programme of the previous year can apply. “Again it is a matter of sustainability: we need to tap talent and provide support for follow-up projects. Fortunately, we will now be able to make this possible with Glashütte Original,” Festival Director Dieter Kosslick comments.

Note:

German films are of course shown not only in the Perspektive, but also in all the other sections of the festival. There is also the series German Cinema - LOLA@Berlinale, which presents films longlisted for the German Film Awards. It is linked to the European Film Market, its main aim being to improve the international marketing of German productions.
