Berlinale: Generation

Generation

Since 1978, the Berlinale has devoted a section to children and young people: Generation. In two competitions, Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus, discoveries from state of the art world-cinema and on a par with young people are presented and the most outstanding of these are awarded the Crystal Bears. Every year, about 60,000 visitors attend the screenings in four venues. Since 2011, Generation’s festival centre has been the Haus der Kulturen der Welt where all of the section’s premieres take place.

Generation integrates children and youth into the festival’s film-aesthetic discourse. At the same time the section is a place for encounters between people of all ages. Discussions in the cinemas offer young audiences, filmmakers and professional guests an opportunity to share their enthusiasm and discovering new perspectives through a critical approach to film.

Films at Eye-Level

Generation speaks to well-defined audiences, but there are no conventional limits when it comes to the selection and programming of films. The section screens extraordinary children’s and youth films. At the same time the programme is home to works that are thematically and aesthetically linked to the experiences of children and young people, despite being originally intended for another target audience. Such films are often suitable for young people and can therefore be also marketed towards them. The “Cross-Section” screenings in Generation also tap into this potential – selected films from other sections are made accessible to viewers under 18 years of age.

Interested representatives of school classes, kindergartens or other institutions can sign up for the section’s newsletter at any time. They will then receive programme information in time for the festival.

Generation projects:

Generation is happy to announce a new cooperation with the youth magazine “fluter”. The jointly developed project “Abenteuer Film” (‘The adventure of film’) will replace the “Young journalists” project. In February, young reporters aged 15 to 18 will cover the Berlinale and the films in the Generation 14plus competition for the website fluter.de. In a workshop led by media professionals, they'll learn all about doing interviews, taking photos, writing articles and publishing online. Every year interested young people can apply for one of the six fluter reporters positions.

Generation cultivates close ties to Berlin schools. Early access to information, ticket ordering and a large number of morning screenings make it easy for school classes to visit the festival.

Alongside regular festival visits, the Berlinale offers around 50 teachers from all types of schools the opportunity to participate in the Berlinale School Project. They see the Generation films before the festival and with the support of the project director, select a film which is relevant to the subject they are teaching. They then watch this film with their class at the festival and use it to develop special projects within the framework of their lessons

Depending on the desired focus, films are viewed from a sociopolitical, historical or aesthetic point of view and integrated into classroom material, with various teaching methods possible. Roll-play, theatre pieces, interviews or comparison with a literary work are just some of the ways to approach the medium of film with openness and creativity.

The Berlinale School Project is supported by the nationwide Network for Film and Media Competency “Vision Kino”. All results are published on the website www.visionkino.de. “Vision Kino” offers teachers year-round access to information and teaching aids for working with films in class.
