Berlinale: Berlinale Talent Campus

Berlinale Talent Campus

Every February the Berlinale Talent Campus brings 300 selected talents (writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, actors, editors, distributors, production designers, composers, sound designers and young film journalists) together with professionals from the international film industry. This vital platform has developed into one of the most exciting initiatives at the Berlinale and has led to many success stories of films made by Campus alumni, which can increasingly be enjoyed in the Berlinale film programme. Located in the close proximity of the festival centre and the European Film Market, the Campus hosts many events with Berlinale guests, renowned filmmakers and Campus alumni in the three venues of the HAU Hebbel am Ufer.

Besides the fruitful association of established filmmakers with the award-winners of tomorrow, the Berlinale Talent Campus offers tailored coaching in all areas of film-making. Furthermore, the development of selected film projects is supported during and after the Campus. These projects are also presented in the Campus Online Community.

The Campus continuously cooperates with the Berlinale Co-Production Market. In the framework of the “Talent Project Market”, selected projects by Campus participants are presented to producers and financiers.

The Berlinale Talent Campus is not just an industry event. Many events are public and open to interested Berlinale visitors.

Every Berlinale Talent Campus has a thematic focus, to which a part of the programme is dedicated and for which specific experts are invited.

The Berlinale Talent Campus #11 during the Berlinale 2013 addressed the topic “Some like it hot”: Good films should keep people glued to the screen. But what makes a film great entertainment? The diversity of genres and formats, and the capacity to successfully switch between them has always been a challenge, especially for filmmakers who have recently entered the film industry. “Getting to know the rules of the game is one thing, daring to break these rules and create a space to be playful and unconventional is pivotal. Emerging filmmakers will exchange thoughts with established industry experts on the intricacies of entertainment, how to push storytelling to unexpected levels and how to reach the heart of the audience,” said Campus programme manager Matthijs Wouter Knol.

The Campus closely collaborates with different film festivals around the globe and helps them to build up their own regional networks and to support emerging filmmakers from their continents. The Campus initiative has been exported to Buenos Aires (Argentina), Durban (South Africa), Guadalajara (Mexico), Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Tokyo (Japan), which all host annual Talent Campuses within the framework of festivals and with support from Berlin.
