Berlinale: Infosheet Short Film Upload

Specifications for digital film submissions

Online submission for 2017 will be activated in early September.

Please note that all information currently given on these pages refers to the Berlinale 2016 and is supposed to offer a general insight into film entry procedures.

Uploading a movie file is an optional alternative to the submission by regular post. It is offered for films up to 30 minutes in length.

The upload link is provided on the confirmation page at the end of the short film entry process as well as on the My film entry overview page (after a short film entry has been submitted).

To ensure a high technical quality for the selection process, the following settings for file compression are suggested. Please submit HD material, if possible.

Size / Aspect Ratio Video Codec / Min. Bitrate Audio Codec / Min. Bitrate
720 x 576 px / PAL SD
720 x 480 px / NTSC SD
H.264 main profile / 5.000 Kbit/s AAC / 320 Kbit/s
sampling rate 48 kHz
1280 x 720 px / 16:9 HD
1920 x 1080 px / 16:9 HD
H.264 high profile / 10.000 Kbit/s

Please encode your video data with a constant bitrate and either 24, 25 or 30 progressive frames per second.

If your movie is available in a different file format or on DVD, a conversion to MPEG4 / h.264 is recommended. File conversion is offered by the software "HandBrake" for example, which is free and available for all popular computer operating systems.
