Ingelore Herz Honigstein is 85 years old and deaf. Born in Kuppenheim near the Black Forest in 1924, she didn’t utter her first word until she was six and was twelve before she said her first sentence. As a young girl she was raped by Nazi cadets. Shortly afterwards her family managed to escape to the US. But this was by no means the end of Ingelore’s misery; once in New York she realised that she was pregnant. In 1940 she set off in search of a doctor prepared to give her an abortion.
